Excavation Work on the Second Tunnel of the Horadiz–Aghband Railway Line Completed

According to the Transport, Communications, and High Technologies Working Group operating under the Interdepartmental Center of the Coordination Headquarters, which was established by the relevant Decree of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan to centrally address issues in the liberated territories, 62% of the construction work on the Horadiz–Aghband railway line has been completed.

Tunnels are being constructed at the 104th and 106th kilometers of the 110.4 km-long railway line. One of these tunnels (at the 104th km) is the first railway tunnel in the history of independent Azerbaijan, while the other (at the 106th km) is the longest railway tunnel in the country. Excavation work on the 1,071-meter-long tunnel at the 106th km has already been completed, bringing the overall tunnel construction progress to 65%. Following the excavation, insulation and lining work will be carried out in the tunnel.

It should be noted that the Horadiz–Aghband railway line is part of the Zangezur Corridor, which will be a key component of the Eurasian transport network. This railway will ensure a direct connection with Nakhchivan and further strengthen Azerbaijan’s position on the international transport map.

As a reminder, the foundation of the Horadiz–Aghband railway line was laid by the President of the country in February 2021, and the construction work is being carried out in three phases. The project includes the construction of 9 stations (Horadiz (existing), Yukhari Marjanli,Shukurbayli, Soltanlı, Gumlag, Hakari, Minjivan, Bartaz, Aghband), 4 tunnels, 40 bridges, 3 galleries (artificial engineering structures designed to protect railways from rockfalls and avalanches), 26 road crossings, and more than 500 artificial engineering structures in total.
