As part of the development of the North-South International Transport Corridor, an 8.3 km single-track railway has been constructed from the Astara station to the border with the Islamic Republic of Iran, and a railway bridge has been built over the Astara River. On February 2, 2018, the first test cargo train, consisting of 6 wagons from the Russian Federation, was sent to Iran via the Astara (Azerbaijan) – Astara (Iran) railway route.
Construction and installation works are carried out in two phases. Phase I covers 10 hectares, and Phase II covers 25 hectares, for a total area of 35 hectares. Five water-carrying pipes between the Astara and Kamarbandi bridges, the two-span Baghchasaray bridge, water-carrying culverts, and 1400 meters of railway construction work have been completed and fenced.
As part of the project, the construction of 7 bridges is planned. The construction and installation work on the Baghchasaray bridge has been fully completed, and 70% of the work on the Kamarbandi bridge has been completed. The physical progress of the construction of 5 bridges over the Virmuni River and the riverbed is 90%.
Currently, construction and installation work on platforms 1 and 3 is completed, while work on platform 2 and the container terminal continues. The foundation construction for the main electrical substation building and two 60-ton truck scale buildings has been completed, and two scale platforms have been installed. At the same time, the construction of auxiliary buildings is 70% complete.
Design work for the terminal is 90% completed, and 72.9% of the construction and installation work is finished.
